Writing

I  am the education reporter at the Marshalltown Times-Republican, outside of Des Moines, Iowa. I cover the local K-12 school system, community college, and county government beats, as well as a great number of stories spun from jogging-path daydreams. I’m particularly interested in feature and humor writing.

Here is a sample of works published, for which I was awarded a “Best Coverage of Education” award by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

I have written about veterans issues and health. In an investigation of Madison’s veteran’s community, I found that discussion of Americans’ health  focused on veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and the physical and mental injuries some sustained while serving. I examined the disabilities posed by these injuries, as well as the stigma that comes when we perceive veterans as injured people. I’ve also looked at how real and perceived disability impacts veterans’ job prospects.
